Congratulations, Suzanne!

Suzanne Scholte of Defense Forum Foundation won the Seoul Peace Prize today for her work on the North Korean Human Righst issues for more than a decade. I sent a short but wholehearted tribute to her yesterday:

It is joyous day, today.
Very joyous day, indeed.

When I met Suzanne more than six years ago,
Stupid of me, I said to myself back then.
She is too pretty to do this kind of work,
She is not even a Korean,
She will get tired of this work soon enough.

Six years flew by,
It feels like only yesterday.
Suzanne is still at it,
Suzanne is still laughing and crying with us.
She cries with the defectors,
She cries watching Seoul Train, Yoduk Story, Crossing…
She cries like a baby.

It breaks His heart,
How can I sit by?

All of us look at Suzanne
When we get very tired,
When we get very frustrated.
Like an angel,
Suzanne looks back at us.
You look tired.
You must be very tired.
We have to save them, though.
We have to help the dying people.

Suzanne did not do what she did
To win some awards.
Her prize is in Heaven, she knows.
I am very happy though
She is getting this award.
Very happy, indeed.

All defectors will rejoice,
Sister Suzanne won!
Aunt Suzanne won!
Mrs. Suzanne won!
Suzanne won!

오늘은 기쁜 날입니다.
정말 기쁜 날입니다.

6년전 수잔을 처음 만났을 때,
이런 한심한 생각을 했었습니다.
저 여자분은 이런 험한 일 하기엔
너무 예쁘게 생겼다.
자기나라 사람들 일도 아닌데,
좀 하다가 지쳐 버리겠지.

그런데 6년이란 세월이 흘렀습니다.
순식간에 흘렀습니다.
수잔은 아직까지 열심히 하고 있습니다.
수잔은 아직까지 울기도 하고 웃기도 합니다.
탈북자들 증언을 듣고읽다가 눈물을 흘립니다.
서울기차, 요덕스토리, 크로싱을 보면서,
펑펑 눈물을 흘립니다.

내 하나님께서 저 불쌍한 사람들 때문에 눈물을 흘리시는데
내가 어찌 가만있으랴!

이 일을 하다가 너무 피곤하면 수잔을 바라봅니다.
천사처럼 예쁘고 착하게 생긴 수잔이
우리를 바라봅니다.
탈북자들을 바라봅니다.
힘들지요?
많이 힘들지요?
그래도 저 사람들을 구해야지요.
죽어가는 저 사람들을 구해야지요.

수잔이 상 받으려고 한 일이 아닙니다.
수잔의 상은 자신의 말대로 하늘나라에 있습니다.
그래도 수잔이 상을 받는다니
너무 좋습니다.
